How often do we hear children say "I can't do they!" Even before they have started a task. Have you noticed the ways in which your children learn? Do they like visuals or do they prefer to listen or do things?
Each and every one of us has our own unique ways we can achieve our goals. It sometimes takes that extra guidance to look within and find that special something to evoke our inner motivation. Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP) is a powerful tool that can help your child unlock their potential.
NLP is a tool which allows us to achieve excellence. It aids self-development and is often used in business to help people gain control over the thoughts and emotions they experience to help them build stronger relationships, become better leaders and overcome negative thought processes.
It is all about the way we connect our thoughts, emotions and actions, how we use our senses to take in information and process it to internally get our answers. Our own individual experiences of the world determine how we process and store information, how we go about making decisions and how we relate to one another. Using NLP allows you to understand this process and begin to take account of your own learning styles. This in turn leads us to being better communicators and being able to learn more effectively.
Within the classroom some aspects of NLP become natural as teachers design their lessons based around three key learning styles, kinaesthetic learners, auditory learners and visual learners. Children's learning styles are not fixed and can change through time, however it is important to recognise their more favourable styles. Kinaesthetic learners process information easier when they are practically involved, for example taking part in a science experiment. Auditory learners find they process more effectively through explanations and listening, where as visual learners like to process information through watching, for example being shown how to correctly pass a ball in PE. On a day to day basis teachers cover these varying learning styles without even thinking.
Learning styles is only one element of the fascinating world of NLP and it is amazing how identifying a learning style can be a valuable asset to providing further tools to help aid a child's progression. When a child is able to process information in the most effective way for them it becomes more embedded into the subconscious mind allowing it to have more longevity.
Another method, which previously I have discussed in terms of sport and athletes performance, is the power of visualisation. With the correct guidance our children can be taught this miraculous tool to totally change a negative mindset, potentially caused by low self esteem or even bullying. Those children that 'refuse' to complete a task or 'give up' when things get tricky can be taught how to overcome such barriers to learning. Using an NLP technique known as 'Anchoring', a child can be taught how to feel with stress and improve their concentration. These techniques have been proven to provide children with more confidence in their own abilities allowing them to be happier and therefore achieve their full potential.
At Future Footsteps Coaching and Therapy, a number of workshops are available to help support your child. Whether it be low self-confidence, coping with anxiety or controlling anger, Future Footsteps has the tools to empower your child to become the best version of themselves. Small steps on your child's journey equal giant steps in their adult lives. Providing your children with the tools to self regulate equips them for life.
I have used this quote before but strongly believe it is a very powerful one and more so fitting to this post...
